Texas Teen’s Advocacy Brings Statewide Recognition to Caregiving Youth | Official Proclamation from Texas Governor Greg Abbott

Press Alert | February 15, 2025 | The American Association of Caregiving Youth (AACY) applauds 16-year-old Madeline Grace Asbell for her tremendous efforts in raising awareness about Caregiving Youth in Texas. On February 14, she hosted the state’s first-ever Caregiving Youth Awareness Day event in Leander, following her successful push for an official proclamation from Texas Governor Greg Abbott recognizing the day statewide.

This landmark recognition builds on Madeline’s continued advocacy, which previously led to an Austin City Council proclamation and a resolution to study the impact of Caregiving Youth in Central Texas. Her work has helped highlight the hundreds of thousands of Caregiving Youth in Texas balancing school, family responsibilities, and their own well-being.

Held at Blue Water Homecare & Hospice, the event brought together Caregiving Youth advocates, policymakers, healthcare professionals, and community members to raise awareness and push for greater support for young caregivers. Madeline’s advocacy was also featured in an interview with KXAN, among other media outlets, further amplifying awareness of over 5.4 million Caregiving Youth in the United States.

Her efforts extend beyond the event. She continues to collaborate with UT Austin, Austin Public Health, and Del Valle ISD to develop a survey assessing the needs of Caregiving Youth. In addition to her policy and community advocacy, she also uses her pageant platform as Royal International Miss Role Model Jr. Teen 2024 to raise awareness about the challenges faced by young caregivers. In October 2024, her leadership was nationally recognized when the White House named her a finalist in the Girls Leading Change Award.

AACY commends Madeline’s incredible impact in bringing Governor-level recognition to Caregiving Youth and remains committed to ensuring that all Caregiving Youth receive the recognition and support they deserve.
